Old San Juan Landmarks: Day 3


La Garita del Diablo: A sentry box in El Fuerte San Cristobal. Legend
has it, that Spanish soldiers working there would disappear never to be seen
again.
 
 
 
 
El Hamburguer: An old fashioned hamburger joint in San Juan where
the quality of food is like no other. It is a favorite of locals and
tourists alike.

 
 
 
Hotel El Convento: Hotel El Convento was a convent housing
the nuns until 1903. Today, it is a popular 4-Star hotel
in San Juan. The hotel is minutes away from many other historic sites
here in San Juan.

 
 
 
Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña: An institute housed in this building since 1992 whose
purpose is to investigate, conserve, and promote Puerto Rico's culture. Before this, the building was the Spanish welfare house.

 
 
 
Liga de Arte: A center for university students that dedicates
itself to arts and design.

 
 
La Mallorquina: Claimed to be the oldest restaurant in Puerto Rico, La
Mallorquina offers a wide variety of Puerto Rico's specialties
recognized all over the world.

 
 
 
Monumento a Juan Amezquita: The oldest monument
in Viejo San Juan. It commemorates and recognizes
Juan Amezquita, who helped defend the island against
the Dutch in El Morro.

 
 
 
 
Museo del Niño: A museum is San Juan for children.
Here, kids of all ages can have fun while learning about
the world we live in.

 
 
 
Museo de Felisa Rincón de Gautier: A dynamic and
active museum that celebrates Felisa Rincón, the first woman
to be elected as mayor of a capital city in the Americas.

 
 
 
Old Location of the Pablo Casals Museum

Pablo Casals Museum: A museum centered on musical instruments
that is dedicated to Pablo Casals. Pablo Casals was a Puerto Rican
cellist whose music demonstrated his feelings on the political oppression
of his time.

Old San Juan Landmarks: Day 2

Galería Nacional: The National Gallery hosts paintings from
famous Puerto Rican artists. It contains works from Jose Campeche
and Fransico Oller.
 
 
 
Fuerte San Geronimo: A fort used as the first line of defense
against the English and Dutch attacks on Puerto Rico in the 18th century.
Today, El Fuerte San Geronimo is open to visitors.

La Fortaleza: La Fortaleza is the oldest governor's mansion in the
western hemisphere. During its construction, Spanish architecture
was taken into great consideration. It has been the governor's residence
for centuries.

Cementerio de Santa María de Pazzis: A colonial-era cemetery, also
referred to as Cementerio de la Perla and Cementerio de los Próceres.
The cemetery contains the graves of many iconic Puerto Rican figures.

Alejandro Tapia y Rivera= A poet, playwright, dramaturg, essayist,
and writer.

 
Pedro Albizu Campos= A Puertorrican attorney and politician.

Jose Julián Acosta= A journalist and advocate of the abolition
of slavery in Puerto Rico.




Jose De Diego= A poet, lawyer, and advocate for Puerto Rico's
independence from Spain



Jose Gautier Benitez=  A Puerto Rican poet of the Romantic Era.








Centro de Estudios Avanzados de Puerto Rico y el Caribe: A
university accredited by the Middle States Comission on Higher Education
and by the Consejo General de Educación. Its goal is to create professionals
that are committed to Puerto Rico and its culture.

 
 
 
Cuartel de Ballajá: The Ballajá Barracks were built in 1854. They were meant
to house Spanish troops and their families. Today, El Cuartel de Ballajá
contains many educational organizations and museums, perhaps the most
well known being, Museo de las Americas.

 
 
Department of State: The Department of State's main purpose is
to encourage and strengthen the relationships of Puerto Rico's government.
It promotes Puerto Rico's cultural image and demonstrates its economic development
to other countries.
 
 
 
Escalinata de las Monjas: It has access to the Caleta
de las Monjas Street. The Escalinata is near Hotel
el Convento and El Museo del Niño.
Escuela de Artes Plasticas: A university center specializing
in arts and design. It offers degrees in six fields of study.
